The Night Chicago Died by “Paper Lace was their follow-up to Billy Don’t Be a Hero and hit number one on the US Billboard Hot 100 this week in 1974. It also topped the charts in Australia and New Zealand. The song tells a story about the notorious gangster Al Capone and his men having a shootout out with the police. There has been plenty of debate as to whether or not the story is true. However the song’s co-writer, Mitch Murray, has stated that the song was a work of fiction.
Best song in the night Clubs back in the day…. everyone knew how to sing it and danced to it at least twice a night.
Considering what gets played in clubs these days it makes some of us wonder about the devolution of what passes for music and fun.
Totally my kind of song…. I can play it over and over again.
It was one of the most memorable songs from 1974 and 1974 was arguably one of the greatest years in music.
